The Spanish Premier has described the Gibraltar Treaty as a “historic breakthrough” for the Campo de Gibraltar, saying it would dismantle what he called “the last wall within the European Union”.

Pedro Sánchez was in La Línea on Sunday in his capacity as leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, to support socialist candidate María Jesús Montero ahead of next weekend’s Andalusian regional elections.

Addressing party activists at a packed Palacio de Congresos, the PSOE leader focused part of his speech on Gibraltar and the future Treaty.

Pedro Sanchez said the agreement would bring prosperity to the region, guarantee freedom of movement, and safeguard the rights of more than 15 thousand cross-border workers once the frontier barrier is removed.

Mr Sánchez told supporters that Spain had achieved something it had been pursuing for centuries, and praised Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares for his role in the negotiations. He also highlighted the involvement of María Jesús Montero in the process.

It is believed to be the first time the Spanish Premier has spoken publicly in La Línea itself about the Gibraltar treaty.

The PSOE is hoping to regain control of the Andalusian government, the Junta de Andalucia, from the Partido Popular in next Sunday’s vote.
