Fabian Picardo says it would be "foolish" for any future Spanish government to try to reverse the Gibraltar Treaty.
Speaking to Spanish journalists at the weekend, the Chief Minister said opposition parties in Spain may criticise the deal now, but would find it difficult to bring back frontier restrictions once the benefits become clear.
Fabian Picardo said Gibraltar remains on track for the removal of frontier controls on the 15th of July.
He also reportedly confirmed that Schengen checks at the Airport will be carried out by two Spanish National Police officers and two Gibraltar officers.
He told Spanish journalists, the focus now is not on ceremonies, but on making sure the agreement works from day one.
