RGP arrest local man on suspicion of racially aggravated harassment after comment posted online

The Royal Gibraltar Police have arrested a 49 year old local man on suspicion of racially aggravated harassment and improper use of public electronic communications.

This comes after a racist comment about Minister for Transport, Vijay Daryanani, was made on GBC's Facebook page on Monday evening. It was publicly denounced by Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, and Together Gibraltar leader, Marlene HassanNahon.

The RGP say they are currently investigating three incidents which have been reported in relation to comments made on social media channels. The man who was arrested is on police bail, with a second man also assisting police with inquiries.

The RGP say this type of hate content or abuse language will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly when reported, as with any other crime. They remind the public that we live in a tolerant society with freedom of expression, but add any offences of this nature committed online will be investigated, and offenders will be dealt with.
