Almost three tonnes of cannabis valued at over £14 million have been seized by the Royal Gibraltar Police. It follows a multi agency search which took place in the early hours of Friday morning, which also resulted in the arrest of three men in Spain.
The search, involving Customs, the RGP and Salvamento Maritimo began at around 5am when the weather was at its worst. A twelve metre RHIB carrying the bales had run into trouble and was taking in water. The three occupants were rescued by Salvamar and taken to Algeciras.
The RIB drifted to Rosia Bay, with its cargo still onboard. The vessel then capsized after crashing against the rocks, spilling the bales onto the shore. The RGP and GDP's entire current intake of recruits, along with some Customs officers, were deployed to help cordon off the area and recover the bales.
The cannabis is in police custody and investigations continue.
