RGP warns against online scams using direct messages to offer financial returns

Published by GBC News

The RGP is warning against online scams where fraudsters use direct messages to offer unrealistic financial returns.

In recent weeks, it's become aware of one person who's been defrauded of several thousand pounds and of others targeted by investment fraudsters.

The RGP says these attempts mainly use social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

Another technique is to direct people to a ‘Crypto Currency’ page that, although appears legitimate, has been created for the sole purpose of defrauding potential investors. This will again promise unrealistic returns for a small investment.

Other scams involve fake competitions, quizzes or puzzles - all of which promise big prizes for a small entrance fee.

The RGP asks anyone who receives a suspicious online ‘investment’ offer such as these, not to respond and report it.

It asks the public to remember that if something is too good to be true it normally is.
