Road blocks lifted after metal workers secure pay rise

Across the border, a return to normality on Thursday afternoon.

Access roads into La Linea and San Roque have been cleared after striking metal workers called off all industrial action.

On Wednesday night a pre-agreement was reached over pay conditions between unions and the Metal Workers Federation.

As a sign of goodwill, striking workers lifted blockades on the main access roads on Thursday morning, but maintained picket lines at the San Roque refinery.

Later in the morning, an agreement was signed.

Workers have secured a 2 per cent increase to their salaries, with a further pay review planned for 2024.

For the past ten days almost 20,000 metal workers across the province of Cadiz have blocked access roads to the province’s main cities.

Locally, commuters experienced lengthy delays coming into Gibraltar, after all access roads to La Linea and San Roquewere barricaded by the striking workers.
