The Feast of Saint Valentine was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 in honour of Saint Valentine of Rome.
It is said the 14th of February was chosen in an effort to "Christianise" a pagan fertility festival held around the same date.
However, it wasn't until many years later that the day became associated with romantic love.
