Rosia Road sinkhole traced to sewer damage, long-term fix planned

A sinkhole that opened up on Rosia Road earlier this year has been traced to a defect in the main sewer line running close to a nearby wall.

This was revealed in response to GBC questions, following an investigation by the Technical Services Department.

Although it was quickly filled in, the large sinkhole that appeared near the Jumpers building in March raised safety concerns among local residents.

It followed a similar incident in 2022, further along the same road, which saw part of the pavement collapse.

In response to GBC queries, a spokesperson confirmed that a small hole had formed in the main sewer.

This defect allowed fine materials in the surrounding ground to be gradually washed away, eventually leading to the collapse and formation of the sinkhole.

While temporary stabilisation work has already been carried out, the department said that due to the sewer’s difficult location, permanent repair works will take more time.

A long-term solution is currently being worked on and is expected to be implemented in the coming months.

In the meantime, officials say the site is being closely monitored to ensure public safety.
