A forest fire in San Roque has been brought under control after forcing the precautionary evacuation of several nearby homes.

The blaze broke out this afternoon in the Pasada Honda area, near the road linking San Roque with the Pinar del Rey.

Emergency services prevented the flames from crossing the road, although fire fighting operations remain under way.

A large deployment was mobilised by the Infoca Wildfire service, including more than 50 fire fighters, specialist crews, fire engines and aircraft.

San Roque's mayor, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, urged the public to avoid the area and follow official advice.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and authorities have not released details of the area affected.
