The captain of a cruise ship has apologised for a sign placed on the pier at the Cruise Terminal, which welcomed visitors to "Gibraltor" with an outline of Gibraltar around a picture of the Spanish flag.
The sign caused outrage on social media. The Chief Minister directed a Senior Port Officer to board the Koningsdam ship, from the Holland-America line, to demand that the sign be removed and that the ship's captain write a formal letter of apology.
According to the Government, the ship's captain wrote the letter within an hour, apologising for using the incorrect flag. He stated he "fully respects the history of Gibraltar as a British stronghold" and understands how "using the incorrect flag may affect the Gibraltarians". The ship's captain said they would revisit their processes on board to ensure mistakes like this are caught in future.
