Spain has issued a formal protest to the UK government over the upcoming Royal visit to Gibraltar by the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
Prince Edward and his wife Sophie will visit between the 7th and 9th of next month, as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The visit was announced by the Earl in March, when he presented the Royal Gibraltar Regiment with new colours at Windsor Castle, coinciding with the Regiment's conducting public duties in London.
According to reports in the Spanish media, diplomatic sources have confirmed that the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its disapproval of the visit to the UK, saying this comes at a inopportune time when negotiations are still ongoing over a future EU relationship treaty for Gibraltar.
