A Spanish fisherman has been reported for using a prohibited trammel net in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.
This follows an incident early Wednesday morning, when the Spanish fishing boat Alejandrawas intercepted by an Environment Department vessel, with the help of the Royal Gibraltar Police.
In response to GBC questions, the Government said the net had been spotted earlier and the operation was planned in advance.
It said the Royal Navy also attended the scene after a Guardia Civil boat arrived, but that contact with the Guardia Civil was "cordial at all times".
However, a Convent spokesperson said this was considered an incursion by the Guardia Civil, and will be protested to the Spanish authorities.
Asked about some local anglers' concerns over perceived double standards in enforcement, the Government says the fact that the Spanish boat was reported and made to leave BGTWshows that Spanish fishermen cannot act with impunity.
The Government added the necessary documentation was obtained, and the boat's captain was reported for offences under the Nature Protection Act and Marine Protection Regulations, with the case to be processed in court.
