With July 15th now set as the new date for the provisional application of the Gibraltar treaty, the Spanish Foreign Minister hails it as a historic step.

But the La Linea Mayor is more cautious, calling for key issues to be resolved before the deal takes effect.

Spain’s Foreign Minister has welcomed the delay of the provisional application of the Gibraltar Treaty to July 14th.

In a social media post, José Manuel Albares described the wider agreement as “a historic success” and “a success for Spain and for Europe.”

He said it will remove physical barriers at the frontier and bring greater certainty for thousands of cross-border workers in the Campo de Gibraltar.

The Spanish Foreign Minister added that it will also benefit businesses on both sides of the border after Brexit.

But in La Línea, Mayor Juan Franco has taken a more cautious line.

He says the postponement comes as no surprise and says the extra time should be used to resolve key outstanding issues.

Among them, he highlights support for fishermen, pension rights for cross-border workers, and clearer detail on economic support for La Linea.
