A Spanish police officer has spent several days with the Royal Gibraltar Police to learn more about the Rock's British style of policing. Superintendent Oscar Vico Cuesta is part of the Policia Local in Burjassot, a community of around 50,000 people just outside Valencia.
According to an RGP statement, he made the personal request to his superior officer, who saw the benefits of bringing back new ideas.
In addition to studying the structure and capabilities of the RGP, he was particularly keen to see ‘policing by consent’ in action. He spent time with officers in Community Policing, Roads Policing and in the Victim Support teams.
Superintendent Vico Cuesta was also briefed on the RGP’s policies regarding Professionalism and its handling of crimes.
He said a great deal of what he has learned can be adopted and implemented back home, adding his experience with the RGP will help make him a better officer.
