The Supreme Court has seen Gibraltar's first sentencing for the offence of strangulation since the legislation was enacted in 2023.

At the Supreme Court, 69-year-old Louis Pitto of Main Street was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months and issued a fine of £2,000 following his arrest in 2024, for which he later entered a guilty plea.

He was also sentenced for a charge of common assault.

The RGP says that this outcome demonstrates they will not tolerate domestic abuse in any form and are dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable people.

They added that officers and specialist investigators will listen, support, and act to bring perpetrators to justice.

A spokesperson said anyone experiencing any form of Domestic Abuse should contact the RGP on 20072500 or email domesticabuse@royalgib.police.gi.

They said always call 999 in an emergency.
