Two teenage boys have been handed prison sentences this week for assault and burglary. One 16-year-old was sentenced to 28 weeks in custody, partly due to his involvement in a burglary which saw £1,000 stolen from a restaurant.
They will be kept in their own wing at Windmill Hill prison as there is no detention centre for Juveniles on the Rock. The boys will be in the company of a 16-year old-who has been detained at the prison since his October arrest.
Back in 2017 the government announced a separate detention centre for young prisoners would be built, with a location near the university touted, however no concrete plans have been announced since. GBC has requested an interview on the subject and is awaiting a reply.
