Three migrants arrested but others feared lost at sea as a boat sailing from Morocco sinks in the bay

Published by GBC News

Three Moroccans, two of whom are juveniles, have been arrested on suspicion of being in Gibraltar without permit or certificate.

GBC understands a boat set sail from Morocco Saturday night with possibly seven migrants on board, before running into difficulty and sinking in the bay.

The Port Authority led a search and rescue operation on Sunday morning along with the RGP and Customs, for the other people in the boat, who are still missing.  At the time of writing this report, it is unclear how many there were.

Of the three arrested, two managed to swim to a nearby ship, while the third reached the detached mole. The Port alerted the RGP who carried out the arrests before taking them to New Mole House

The Port’s search for the missing individuals lasted three to four hours, but it’s believed the currents may have pulled them north towards Spain. The Spanish authorities have continued their air search into the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the RGP officers on patrol are continuing to check local beaches.
