The political movement Together Gibraltar announced it was suspending its campaign for a referendum on abortion, calling instead for decriminalisation and consultation with a view to updating Gibraltar’s laws. The movement says this was prompted by what it describes as the Chief Minister’s “change of heart” on GBC’s Direct Democracy.
It says Fabian Picardo had previously made it clear he had no intention of changing Gibraltar’s abortion laws as his government had no mandate to do so: therefore, Together Gibraltar said, it campaigned for a referendum to give the Government a mandate, although it believes access to safe, legal abortion services is a human right. It says it looks forward to meeting with the Chief Minister tomorrow with other pro-choice campaigners to discuss the issue.
