The trial of a 50-year-old man accused of raping a child under 13 has began
Jason Laguea, of Mons Calpe Mews, denies four historic allegations of rape against a child, dating back to 2012 and 2013.
The crown’s opening statement described how the girl had been groomed by the man for some years, with the abuse allegedly starting as “sexual games”’ before progressing to rape.
In a recording of a police interview with the girl in 2017, played to the court, she said the man first raped her when she was around 10, with the abuse continuing until she was around 14 or 15. Under cross-examination she later said she couldn’t remember her exact age when it started. She claimed he told her he was her “teacher”, adding she thought it was “normal”.
Defence lawyer Christopher Finch asked why she hadn’t told anyone about the alleged abuse until the age of around 16. Speaking via video link, she said she thought nobody would believe her. It was after watching a film, she said, that she felt she could talk about what happened.
The jury is made up of five men and four women; the trial is expected to last around a week.
