Two new active Covid cases confirmed; both are residents of the Rock and self-isolating

There are two new active confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Gibraltar: both are residents and are isolating at home.

In response to GBC questions, the Government said one case was symptomatic, and the other was detected via a screening test. It said it could only speculate that one case may have been contracted in transit to Gibraltar, with another contracted locally.

GBC understands at least two passengers on a recent BA flight to Gibraltar have since tested positive for COVID-19, with contacts of those passengers having been asked to isolate. Asked to confirm this, as well as the number of passengers tested and contacts asked to isolate, the Government declined to answer, citing the protection of individual confidentiality. It also declined to confirm whether testing would be available for contacts of the passengers who'd tested positive, with Public Health Gibraltar issuing a reminder that the virus needs to incubate for several days before it can be detected.

Thursday's two new confirmed active cases among residents follow the confirmation of two new cases among visitors on Wednesday: both were ships’ crewmen, who were tested on arrival in Gibraltar and are isolating until they are clear of the virus.

The total number of confirmed cases is now 184, with 180 recoveries.

The Government says there are 75 people in self-isolation, with three test results pending.
