UEFA has fined an Irish football club over €21,000, after its fans chanted “Gibraltar es español” during a recent game on the Rock.
According to the Irish Independent, Shelbourne FC was fined for the conduct of its fans during its match against St Joseph’s FC; the newspaper says UEFA also noted that plastic glasses were thrown from the away section during a brawl late in the game.
The match took place shortly after the chants by the Spanish national team in their national celebrations following their Euro 2024 win.
The Gibraltar Football Association said it was “appalled, but not surprised” by what happened at the St Joseph’s game, adding this proved the “unacceptable and obnoxious effect” of what happened at the Madrid celebrations.
UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Spanish players Alvaro Morata and Rodri after a formal complaint by the GFA over their chants in the national celebrations.
The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will now decide on the matter.
