Spain's Vox party has launched a fresh challenge to the Gibraltar treaty as the agreement continues its passage through the European Union's ratification process.

The move underlines ongoing political opposition to the deal from Spain's right wing, despite it remaining on course for consideration by the European Parliament.

A Spanish MEP has challenged the ratification process for the Gibraltar treaty, arguing that Spain's parliament has not approved the agreement.

Jorge Buxadé of the Vox party has asked the European Commission whether the EU can proceed without approval from Spain's national parliament.

The move highlights continuing opposition to the agreement in some sectors of Spanish politics.

However, the treaty remains on course after EU member states approved its text in April, with the European Parliament expected to consider it next.
