Western Beach has been classified as “Excellent” for water quality for the first time.
The latest assessment by the Environmental Agency means all of Gibraltar’s beaches have now reached the highest possible rating under the Bathing Water Directive.
Western Beach was previously affected by pollution from across the border, and was rated “Poor” between 2016 and 2018. It later improved to “Sufficient”, and then “Good” in recent years.
The Environmental Agency says a monitoring system remains in place due to its proximity to Spain, with increased sampling after rainfall to protect bathers.
All other beaches continue to maintain “Excellent” status, reflecting consistently high water quality. Results are published on the Environmental Agency’s website.
The Minister for the Environment, John Cortes, says the result reflects years of work and is extremely encouraging.
