Work has begun at Europa Point on the site of Gibraltar's planned sewage treatment plant.

Preparatory ground works started following the granting of full planning permission for the enabling works.

The Government says the site has now been secured, with contractors beginning to remove rubble and prepare the ground for construction.

Eco Waters and its subcontractors are carrying out the work, while detailed design work for the treatment plant is also progressing.

Environment Minister John Cortes says the start of work follows years of difficulties in delivering the project.

He described breaking ground as "almost a dream come true", adding that the Government remains committed to seeing the sewage treatment plant through to completion.
