Our work as a news organisation (Journalistic Exemption)

Because we are a news organisation, sometimes we may collect and use personal information for journalism. This means writing and publishing stories that are in the public interest.

In these cases, some data protection rules might not apply if:

  • We are collecting and using personal data to prepare or publish a news story.
  • Following the usual privacy rules would stop us from being able to do this.
  • We reasonably believe that publishing the story is in the public interest.
(This means the story is important for people to know, and not just interesting.)

We still have to think carefully before doing this. We consider:

  • Why the story matters to the public.
  • Whether anyone could be harmed by what we publish.
  • How important freedom of speech and journalism are in a democratic society.

Even when the journalistic exemption applies, we always try to use personal information fairly and respectfully.

Changes to this Privacy Notice

We may update this notice from time to time if the way we handle your personal information changes or if the law changes.

If we make important changes, we will let you or your parent or guardian know by posting the new version on our website or in the app.

Ask a parent or guardian

If there’s anything here that you don’t fully understand, it’s a good idea to read this privacy notice together with a parent or guardian. They can help explain and help you decide what to do.
