4300 expressions of interest for 1500 planned affordable homes - Government to make it harder for people to speculate

The Government has received 4300 expressions of interest for the 1500 planned affordable houses it intends to build in the next four years. This was revealed by Housing Minister Samantha Sacramento on GBC’s Viewpoint. She said she expected the allocation process to start early next year.

Ms Sacramento also said the Government will be making changes to the underleases that will make it harder for individuals to speculate on affordable housing. She said the Government will be able to reclaim an affordable home if somebody were to buy it but not live there.

According to the Housing Minister, a lot of people have capitalized on reselling affordable homes in the past, but she said “that is not what these houses are about”.
