The Government has established a new Disclosure and Barring Service, appointing Angelo Cerisola as its first CEO.
Mr Cerisola is currently the Director for Services, Safety and Standards at the Care Agency.
The service will form an important part of the Government's wider work to strengthen safeguarding, ensure safer recruitment and public protection across Gibraltar.
It will support employers, voluntary organisations and statutory bodies in processing disclosure checks and will maintain barred lists identifying those who are banned from engaging in regulated activity with children or adults.
In a statement, the Government says Mr Cerisola brings considerable experience and his appointment will ensure the new service is led by someone with a strong understanding of Gibraltar's existing care structures.
The Disclosure and Barring Service will operate in partnership with, and not in place of, the statutory safeguarding responsibilities of the Care Agency and other relevant bodies. The appropriate safeguarding bodies will continue to retain responsibility for frontline safeguarding investigations, case management and protective interventions.
Work on the relevant legislation is ongoing, and implementation will be announced in due course.
Mr Cerisola said the service is an important opportunity to strengthen public protection and support safer recruitment across the community.
Minister for Health, Care and Business Gemma Arias-Vasquez said this will strengthen Gibraltar's safeguarding and recruitment arrangements.
