In a televised interview with Spain’s Canal 24 Horas, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo reaffirmed his optimism about securing a post-Brexit agreement with Spain and the EU.

He emphasised that negotiations between Gibraltar, the UK, Spain, and the EU have been progressing in good faith, with a shared goal of reaching a deal that benefits all parties.

Mr Picardo acknowledged the complexities of implementing Schengen arrangements and customs controls while ensuring Gibraltar retains control over its affairs.

He dismissed suggestions that Spanish police would operate at Gibraltar’s airport or port, stating that this remains a red line in negotiations.

The Chief Minister reiterated that Gibraltar is not willing to compromise on sovereignty or any arrangement that could lead to a Spanish presence within Gibraltar’s territory.

On taxation, Mr Picardo pointed out that Gibraltar has fulfilled its commitments under the UK-Spain tax treaty and expects to be removed from Spain’s list of non-cooperative jurisdictions.

He also defended Gibraltar’s land reclamation projects, asserting they comply with international environmental regulations.

Addressing wider geopolitical issues, he dismissed concerns about Gibraltar’s strategic position affecting UK-US relations, stating that Gibraltar continues to maintain strong ties with both the UK and NATO allies.
