Drivers with G-less registration numbers can now opt for a shorter front number plate under new regulations published in the Gazette.

G-less registrations are personalised numbers without the traditional G prefix.

The new rules allow vehicles with a G-less registration of three characters or fewer to use a shorter front plate. The option applies to motor vehicles other than motorcycles.

The shorter plate is voluntary and goes at the front of the vehicle only. The standard plate format must continue to be used at the rear, although the owner or registered keeper can reverse their choice at any time.

The regulations also set out two categories of G-less registrations.

G-less private numbers consist only of numbers and can contain between one and six digits.

G-less personalised registration numbers can contain a combination of letters and numbers, of between one and seven characters.

The licensing authority cannot allocate a registration if it has already being used, or if it considers the combination likely to cause offence or confusion.

G-less personalised registrations also cannot contain the letters O, Q or I.

The new regulations come into effect immediately.
