Two previously unrecorded historic graves have been uncovered at Witham's Cemetery during ongoing restoration works by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust.
Although both graves appeared on the original cemetery plan, they had remained buried despite extensive conservation efforts before the site's opening. One grave, identified by only a small section of headstone protruding above the ground, has been confirmed as belonging to a child, although only initials remain visible. The second grave, based on its size, is believed to be that of an adult.
The Heritage Trust says both graves will now undergo appropriate conservation work to ensure they are preserved and respectfully integrated into the restored cemetery landscape.
The discoveries offer a poignant reminder of the personal stories connected to Witham's Cemetery and contribute to a deeper understanding of Gibraltar's heritage.
The Trust says continued restoration work depends on volunteer support and donations. Those wishing to help the Witham's Project can contact the Gibraltar Heritage Trust directly for further information.
