HM Customs is marking International Women’s Day by celebrating the contributions made to the department by women over the decades.
One story, in particular, is of a lady called Victoria, known as “La Matrona”, who was called down to search the Tangier ferry whenever necessary.
Records show that even during the closed frontier years, three women served as customs officers at a time when opportunities in these roles were limited, carrying out essential duties with professionalism and discretion.
From this milestone onwards, more women joined the department in both operational and administrative roles.
Today, they serve across all areas of the department, contributing to frontline enforcement, intelligence, administration and strategic leadership.
Customs say the journey from La Matrona to where we are today reflects how far we have come. However, they say the pursuit of equality in the workplace is an ongoing commitment.
On International Women’s Day, Customs is honouring the legacy of La Matrona, celebrating the achievements of our female officers, past and present, and reaffirming the commitment to equality as we continue to move forward together.
