The new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has reaffirmed the UK’s Government's commitment to the UK-EU treaty on Gibraltar in his first conversation with the Spanish Premier Pedro Sánchez.
Mr Burnham welcomed both the Gibraltar Treaty and the new UK-Spain Strategic Bilateral Framework, saying he wanted to build on the momentum created by the agreements and deepen cooperation between the two countries.
The conversation began on a lighter note, with Mr Burnham congratulating Spain on its World Cup triumph.
The two leaders also discussed the recent wildfires, with the Prime Minister expressing his condolences, thanking Spain for its assistance to affected British nationals and reiterating the UK's offer of support.
For his part, Mr Sánchez described the conversation as "excellent" in a post on X, saying the two leaders shared "many challenges, values and objectives" and were determined to work together to advance "an agenda of progress" for both countries, Europe and the wider world.
They agreed to remain in close contact.
