Spanish premier Pedro Sanchez meets with the Chief Minister at the border. He was accompanied by the Mayor Of La Linea Juan Franco and the Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares. He also met with the Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia.

Mr Sanchez described the UK-EU agreement on Gibraltar as being in the mutual interest of both Spain and Gibraltar, saying it will benefit thousands of Spaniards.

Speaking at the frontier, he began by paying tribute to those affected by the deadly wildfires in Almería before turning to the significance of the agreement.

Mr Sanchez said frontiers are “the scars of history”, but added that “scars heal”. He said the border between Spain and Gibraltar had long been “a scar in healing”, and that the agreement had been achieved by looking to the future while understanding the past.

He said reaching the deal had required courage and respect for each side’s position.

The Spanish Prime Minister said Spain had always acted while respecting Gibraltar’s position, describing the agreement as “a just agreement” that is in Spain’s national interest.
