Avian flu is on the rise across Europe, influencing both the availability and pricing of eggs. However, local suppliers remain confident that they can maintain stable supplies for now.
Flock owners across Europe are to implement strict rules as from November 1st in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus. These AIPZ (Avian Influenza Prevention Zone) measures involve increased cleaning and disinfenction protocols, as well as efforts to prevent contact between poultry and wild birds.
In a statement issued by Gibmaroc, the company said it is working tirelessly to minimise the impact of supply chain issues on customers. It added that it has managed its supply chains and adapted logistics to deliver eggs with as little disruption as possible.
Meanwhile, Eroski supermarket told GBC it has experienced some minor supply issues and has noticed price increases from suppliers. However, it said it is doing its best to mitigate these rises for customers and has so far been able to maintain good stock levels despite the challenges.
Morrisons also told GBC that while it is aware of the current difficulties in the market, it is not presently experiencing any egg shortages.
Bird flu has been spreading rapidly across Europe, with Reuters reporting that the highest number of countries in at least a decade are seeing early outbreaks. Spanish media have also highlighted egg price increases of up to 26% as a result.
