Tributes are being paid following the death of Samuel Fernández, founder and former director of Radio Bahía Gibraltar.

A familiar figure to many on both sides of the frontier, Samuel Fernández maintained close links with Gibraltar throughout his broadcasting career.

For years, Radio Bahía Gibraltar gave extensive coverage to events on the Rock, with Samuel regularly interviewing the Chief Minister, ministers and other public figures.

He was also involved in a number of cross-border initiatives, including meetings of the Cross Frontier Group, reflecting his long-standing support for dialogue and cooperation between Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar.

Away from broadcasting, Samuel was also well known in football. As president of Real Balompédica Linense, he oversaw the club's first promotion to Segunda División B in 1983, a milestone in the club's history.

Samuel Fernández's death has prompted tributes from across the Campo area and Gibraltar, with the Government calling him an unconditional supporter of Gibraltar and its people.

The Chief Minister said he was genuinely sorry to hear of his passing. In a statement he said “He has been a staunch source of personal support to me in recent years and a huge

defender of Gibraltar for decades. He will be greatly missed on the airwaves which his booming voice filled with a just defence of our cause as a people.”

Former Private Sector Chairman and member of the Cross-Border Group Juan Pecino spoke of Samuel's support of people on both sides of the frontier, especially when faced with injustice.
