A 60-year-old man has been sentenced to eight months in prison for breaching his sexual offences prevention order.

The breach dates back to 2024, when Stephen Martinez, a resident of The Hub, smashed his mobile phone and did not report it to the RGP’s Offender Management Team. He is required to do this under his SOPO conditions.

Officers conducted an unannounced visit to Martinez's home in order to inspect his devices, during which he handed over the mobile. It was said to have sustained 'extensive damage.'

He admitted to having smashed it three days earlier, in a ‘fit of anger.'

Chief Justice Anthony Dudley told the court that in his judgment, the act of smashing the mobile phone was a deliberate breach of the sexual offences prevention order, and that the offending was evidently aggravated by previous convictions, as he has breached the SOPO before.

Martinez was sentenced to 12 months' custody, reduced to eight, with time served on remand taken into account.
