A member of British Forces Gibraltar has won a national title at the 2025 British Powerlifting National Championships.
Leading Physical Trainer Sam Dew took first place in the 74-kilogram class at the championships, held at the NEC in Birmingham earlier this month. The event is regarded as the highest level of competition in British powerlifting and features only the top fifteen athletes in each weight category.
Mr Dew opened strongly with a 272.5 kg squat, putting him in the lead. He then extended his advantage with a 177.5 kg bench press, a personal best. Going into the final deadlift event aware of strong competition, he adopted a cautious strategy and successfully lifted 270 kg, matching his personal best.
His combined total of 720 kg secured him the national title and marked a new competitive personal best. The result also meets the qualifying standard for Team GBR, earning him selection to represent Great Britain at the 2026 European Powerlifting Championships in Malta.
Mr Dew described the victory as the result of years of consistent training and said he was proud to represent Great Britain. Commander British Forces Gibraltar Commodore Tom Guy praised the achievement, describing it as a reflection of both dedication and professionalism.
