Did you know you need a licence to hold a raffle?

Two Glacis residents were caught out after selling a Rolex to fund the venture, buying prizes that included £300 worth of lottery tickets, a gold watch and two iPhones.

Speaking at the Magistrates’ Court, one defendant said she was planning to donate her share of the raffle proceeds to GBC open day.

The neighbours claimed they had no idea they needed a gambling licence, and promised not to do it again.

The pair pleaded guilty and were let off with a 12 month conditional discharge. This means that if they don’t commit a crime in the next year, they will receive no punishment for this offence.

Stipendiary Magistrate Charles Bonfante told the ladies to stay out of trouble and suggested they “certainly don’t run anymore raffles without a licence”.
