The Dutch Ambassador to the UK has welcomed the UK/EU Treaty, saying it will help strengthen relations between Gibraltar and the Netherlands. Paul Huijts visit to the Rock follows the appointment of Rocio Corrales Martin as the new Honorary Consul to the Netherlands.
The Ambassador today paid a visit to the Chief Minister.
Mr Huijts, who took up his post in 2024, previously served as Secretary-General of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has also held a number of senior public service roles, including Head of the Office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands.
At a reception in his honour, both the Ambassador and the new Honorary Consul highlighted the historical links between Gibraltar and the Netherlands which of course date back to 1704 and the capture of Gibraltar by Anglo-Dutch forces. But that is history and the aim now is to continue building links between both communities and ensuring Dutch citizens are represented on the Rock.
For her part the new Honorary Consul is keen to get to work immediately. Brought up in the Netherlands, Rocio CorralesMartin told GBC she was excited and honoured to be able to represent Dutch people on the Rock.
Last night the Ambassador had the opportunity to meet the local Dutch community and enjoy a few tapas with a taste of home.
His meetings today were more formal as he paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Minister at No 6 Convent Place.
