Gibraltar NASUWT welcomes Govt commitment to addressing violence in schools

The Gibraltar NASUWT has welcomed the Government and Department of Education's commitment to taking steps to tackle violence in schools.

However, it challenges their assertion that schools already act "swiftly and appropriately".

It says if this was the case, there would be little need for the current discussion and drive for improvement.

The Gibraltar NASUWT says it agrees with the Government and the Department of Education that the majority of students are responsible and respectful.

It says this is precisely why firm and consistent consequences are needed when there's unacceptable and violent behaviour.

The teachers' union says it hopes the fight outside the comprehensive schools this week, which was filmed and circulated on social media, will galvanise collective will to ensure schools and teachers are safeguarded.

It says discipline should not be viewed as the opposite of pastoral care, but as a necessary complement to it.

The Gibraltar NASUWT claims teachers have faced "punitive measures" after intervening in violent situations, despite acting in accordance with the training endorsed by the Department.

It thanks the teachers who intervened in the recent fight despite "potential personal and professional risks".

The union says the most urgent priority remains clear, concise and practical safe handling policies, adding it looks forward to engaging with the Government and the Department to achieve this.
