Ian McGrail calls for reopening of criminal investigation into witness inducements

McGrail Inquiry | 11th July 2025, 20:30 | Published by GBC News

The former Police Commissioner, Ian McGrail, is calling for the reopening of the investigation into alleged witness inducements linked to the Inquiry into his early retirement.

His lawyer, Charles Gomez, has written to the new RGP Commissioner following publication of the Principal Auditor's report, which highlights over £1 million in “ex-gratia” payments were made to retiring RGP officers, which he describes as unjustified “golden handshakes.”

Mr McGrail alleges a corrupt "secret Government scheme" led by the Chief Minister, which saw public service jobs offered to up to 31 RGP officers on a "no questions asked" basis. Mr Gomez states all would go on to provide critical evidence to the Inquiry against Mr McGrail.

During the hearing last year, a former officer admitted receiving an inflated pension under the agreement, but now Mr Gomez says it appears other payments were also made.

Ian McGrail is urging the RGP to investigate offences such as potential bribery, perverting the course of justice and misconduct in public office. If the RGP declines, he says he will seek an independent investigation from the Governor.
