King Charles leads tributes to Governor's late father - Admiral of the Fleet Sir Benjamin Bathurst

King Charles has led tributes to the Governor's late father, Sir Benjamin Bathurst, who died last October at the age of 89.

A 19-gun salute was fired at Portsmouth Naval Base as a memorial service to celebrate Sir Benjamin's life began in Westminster.

Friends, senior military figures and dignitaries held a moment of silence at St Margaret's Church where King Charles described him as “a wonderful man who drew the admiration of all he met.”

Sir Benjamin became the First Sea Lord before leaving office in 1995, and became the last Royal Navy Officer to be promoted to Admiral of the Fleet, a five-star rank.

His passing leaves only the King with the title.
