Legislation regulating the short term let market is now in effect.

Passed unanimously in parliament, the new law is phase two of the register of property occupation act.

Since 2022, residents have been legally required to register themselves at their address and anyone living with them.

Phase two of the legislation will see short term rentals following similar rules.

The short term let sector has seen rapid growth, particularly since the pandemic.

This boom has led to a need to regulate the industry, with being clamp downs being introduced across Europe and beyond.

Here in Gibraltar, it’s no different.

Phase two of the legislation around property registration will see any new short term lets must now be registered before being advertised or rented.

Existing rentals must be registered by the end of September.

Tourism Minister Christian Santos said the framework would ensure the short-term rental market was ‘more transparent’ , with Business minister Gemma Arias Vasquez describing the process as ‘straight-forward’.
