A local man has had his prison sentence reduced by one year after the Court of Appeal upheld part of the appeal.

Karl Danino was originally sentenced to eight and a half years in prison in January,  after pleading guilty to aggravated burglary and threats to kill following an incident in 2024.

At his sentencing earlier this year, Karl Danino received an eight year and one month prison sentence for the charge of aggravated burglary, with a further 20 weeks for threats to kill, to run consecutively.

On appeal, his lawyer Neil Costa argued the overall sentence was "manifestly excessive."

The grounds of the appeal were summarised in four points. Danino argued there had been errors in the categorisation of the aggravated burglary offence, that there were errors when addressing aggravating and mitigating factors, a failure to give 'sufficient discount' for his guilty plea, as well as the overall length of the sentence.

Although the appeal judges rejected most of the appeal arguments, they did find that some aggravating factors had been double counted.

They agreed that the appropriate sentence for the aggravated burglary charge, before reduction for the guilty plea, was eight years.

After applying the 10% reduction for his guilty plea, the sentence for aggravated burglary was reduced to seven years and two months.

Adding the consecutive 20-week sentence for threats to kill, the Court reduced his total sentence to seven and a half years.

The judgement also noted Danino's constructive behaviour in prison.
