Public Health is calling on the community to take up the flu vaccine this winter.

It says 66 people were admitted to hospital last year due to the flu, highlighting the majority were not immunised.

This year's flu campaign launched in October, but Public Health is asking those that haven't yet taken up the offer to do so. It stresses the importance of protecting yourself and those around you from serious illness, particularly at this time of year.

The flu vaccine is recommended if you are 50 years-old and over, have a long term health condition, pregnant, a health or care worker or a resident at Elderly Residential Services.

Public Health highlights the flu virus changes annually so last year's vaccine might not provide necessary protection.

Acting GHA Director General Lysandra Debono says the vaccine is quick, safe and takes a few minutes, but the protection lasts all season long.

You can access the vaccine through your GP or at walk in clinics from 1-4pm on weekdays. You can make an appointment by calling 20052441.
