Commuters faced serious delays on Tuesday morning as strike action in Spain’s metal sector caused major disruption around La Línea.
Key access roads were either blocked by pickets or closed by police as a precaution.
The only alternative route, the Higuerón road, remained open but was heavily congested.
The strike by metal industry workers follows the collapse of a proposed agreement between unions and employers in the province of Cádiz.
La Línea has been particularly hard hit because most access points to the city were blocked or closed off, leaving just one overcrowded route - even though it has no metal industry of its own.
La Linea mayor, Juan Franco, called the disruption unjustifiable and warned of real social consequences, with residents missing work, school and medical appointments.
With no resolution yet in sight, further action in the coming days could result in more traffic delays.
