The Spanish Premier has kept his coalition intact despite the major corruption scandal involving the PSOE party.
His continued leadership is significant for Gibraltar, as the legal text of the Treaty is being drafted and finalised ahead of a possible signing this autumn.
Pedro Sánchez has admitted he considered resignation after the corruption scandal involving PSOE officials Santos Cerdán and José Luis Ábalos. Cerdán is currently in pre-trial detention, while Ábalos remains under judicial restrictions.
However, addressing the Spanish Parliament today, the Premier said he will remain in office and is committed to restoring public trust.
He announced a 15-point anti-corruption plan, led by the creation of an independent public integrity agency with support from the OECD. Other measures include stronger auditing of political parties, publication of large donations, AI-based detection of anomalies in public spending, extended statutes of limitation, and tougher penalties.
The plan is designed to stabilise the government coalition.
Although some allies, including Sumar, ERC, Bildu and Junts, voiced concern at the corruption scandal, most continue to back the Premier.
Their support is essential for Pedro Sánchez to remain in office.
