Spain’s King Felipe has described the proposed Gibraltar agreement as a “historic pact” that would bring “confidence, legal certainty, and stability” to both Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, the Spanish monarch said the agreement respects Spain’s position on sovereignty and jurisdiction over Gibraltar.
He was referring to the understanding reached on 11 June between Spain, the UK, and the EU, which lays the groundwork for a future treaty. That understanding includes a clause that, according to Spain, makes “explicitly clear” that the deal does not affect its longstanding position on Gibraltar’s sovereignty.
The Gibraltar reference came during a wider address on Spain’s foreign policy priorities.
