The UK’s Secretary General and Chief Executive of the National Commission for UNESCO, James Bridge, visited Gibraltar’s Gorham’s Cave Complex on Friday, describing it as “a world-class place of wonder, cutting-edge research and extraordinary stories.”
Mr Bridge toured the World Heritage Site with Professors Clive and Geraldine Finlayson, alongside Dr Stewart Finlayson and archaeologist Stephanie Kassam, who explained the latest excavation work being undertaken at the site.
The UK National Commission supports the UK’s contribution to UNESCO, including its Overseas Territories. Mr Bridge praised the Gibraltar team for bringing Neanderthal and Phoenician history to life and said the site brings “international interest, connections and opportunities.”
Later, Mr Bridge met with Gibraltar’s Minister for Heritage, John Cortes, who said: “Once again, the fantastic work being done by the team at the National Museum has been recognised by a top expert. James was extremely impressed by Gorham’s and will carry that message far and wide in the world of UNESCO and World Heritage.”
