In his May Day message, the Leader of the Opposition has criticised the Government’s handling of the economy, public finances and preparations for the UK/EU Treaty, saying a more strategic approach is needed to support workers and businesses in Gibraltar.

Keith Azopardi says there is a pattern of the Government saying one thing and doing another, arguing that this is particularly evident in its handling of the economy and cost-of-living issues.

He questions the Government’s preparedness for the implementation of the UK/EU Treaty, saying businesses have been left waiting for guidance despite what he describes as years of lead-in time and repeated announcements about progress in negotiations.

The Opposition leader also raises concerns about public spending and governance, pointing to reports by the Principal Auditor and calling for tighter control of what he describes as waste and poor financial management.

He also criticises Government Ministers for backing the use of public funds to support the Chief Minister’s legal challenge against the Openshaw Report findings, saying it reflects a wider need for change in how Government operates

Keith Azopardi says change will come at the ballot box, arguing that only a change of Government will resolve the issues it has set out.
